"Mickey" (feat. Mickey the True Original & Disney Style)
I don't even know where to begin. My love for Disney has always been at the forefront of my brand, my music, and everything that I am. Right when I was brought into this world my nursery was Lion King themed. I collected all the classic Disney VHS's from the 90's to the early 2000's, I still have my collection. I grew up singing the songs of The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, and Mulan. Toy Story was my everything, I had each animated action figure that talked to each other, god I miss those. Tarzan was the first movie I ever watched in theaters. Winnie The Pooh always felt like a piece of home every time a new adventure VHS would release. I jammed out to the sing a long Disney videos like no one was watching. I got into reading because of Marvel. Everyone already knows my love for comics started with my hero, Spiderman. In 1999 I fell in love with a Galaxy far far away in the form of Star Wars, tbh the Taco Bell toys are what got me interested in films that I love so much. Kermit the frog told me it was okay to be green when I was a kid, little did I know he was prepping me for when I would become green with Glaucoma. I grew up on the Disney Channel. Lizzie Mcguire was and still is one of my all time favorite shows, Hilary Duff helped me dream big to become a singer. Along came High School Musical and my love for musical theater grew and grew and I still jam out to the soundtracks every single week. Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana was a huge turning point for me, Hannah & Miley inspired me to write my own music, all thanks to this girl who lived the Best Of Both Worlds. Every Halloween I play Halloweentown, it is a tradition of mine. When I got diagnosed with Glaucoma, Queen Elsa became a beacon of hope for me because seeing her own her flaws, seeing her "Let It Go", showed me, that one day, I could do the same. Once Upon A Time airing every Sunday & Friday nights gave me my weekly dose of magic and hope that I desperately needed and still need every week. My life would feel so weird without the impact these properties have made on me. It would not be possible without a man named Walt, who created a mouse named Mickey.
I saved Mickey for last because this whole page is a love letter to him. I live in a world where I am blessed to have the magic of this little mouse inspire me daily. I genuinely get real emotional when I talk about Disney because everything in my life is sort of built around this Mouse and the house he comes from. Mickey Mouse turns 90 this year and I was originally gonna do some sort of love letter in November to a Mouse that I adore more than anything. I was lucky enough that I actually got to go and celebrate Mickey early, in such a special way. It's like the stars were aligning for me. I got an invite to attend an exhibition here in SF. Now that I am getting deeper into this social influencer world, my name is starting to get around a lot more. To be able to go to a Disney event is one of the highest honors for me. Especially considering my background and upbringing, this is something that means a lot to me. Courtney would have loved to go with me, My sister is my Disney partner in crime. She wasn't able to make it so I went for the both of us. I asked my brother Steven and my god brother Braden if they would like to hop in my uber and experience and unforgettable night. Kenny Scharf created an exhibit that bought the magic of Disney and Mickey to life in a whole new way. Going to this event was like stepping into a snow globe filled with magical colors. To be able to experience this magic with my brothers is something that only Disney could do, thanks to the genius mind of Kenny. Each detail was so unique and just thinking about it brings me back to the magic of that night. I obviously turned on my hoarder side and tried to take as much of the free things that were offered.. it is Disney, and we don't judge Disney collectors like me, lol. I love Mickey and to leave there filled up on Mickey cocktails, was an adult musketeers dream. To think Mickey Mouse is 90 years old. 90 years have gone by and he still stands tall above the castle Walt built. My nephews are huge Disney fans. I always tell them, you must respect Mickey. Without Mickey we would't have the other films and characters we have today. It all started with that Mouse. If i'm being honest, I don't think Walt would have ever thought his castle would be filled with so many iconic properties that shape the world today. He just created a mouse with dreams that he could be something more. 90 years later, Mickey is something more, he is everything. To see that look in my nephews eyes each time we talk about anything Disney, it is the same look I had when i was their age. The love of Mickey is something that is never ending. Mickey brings people closer together, he brings love to our hearts, and hope to our families. When we are down and need a smile we turn on our screens to see him or one of his many friends from a catalog full of franchises. When the Mickey Mouse club theme song comes on, we proudly say M I C K E Y M O U S E, is the leader of the club. Because without this mouse, a lot of us wouldn't have the things we love today. So thank you, Mickey. Thank you for leading us to where we are today. The world can get so dark, especially the world we live in today. To have this little beacon of hope from a mouse that has seen it all, every up and down, through the dark and into the light, we have a lot to be thankful for, and oh boy, we are thankful for you. We are thankful that you have stayed with us for the past 90 years and the next 90 years and beyond.
I may be one of the biggest Disney fans, but believe it or not, I've never been to Disneyland of Disney World. I know that is so sad. I never got to go as a kid, my parents would buy me everything Disney to make up for that. As an adult I didn't even get a chance to use the SoCal Discount I was able to get thanks to my address. I hope that one day I will get to go and finally experience something that I should have experienced all along. Kenny Scharf and the magic he brings to Mickey The True Original will keep me satisfied for now. It will also keep me hoping that the world we live in now, can take a cue from Kenny and Mickey, and one day be brighter and better than ever. If a leader like Mickey could go through 90 years of up's and downs, then we can take a few years of up's and downs and know that we will always come out on top with the magic and love that Mickey has represented through it all.
Happy 90th Birthday Mickey.
I love you.
