This page is made in collaboration with Bleecker Street in promotion of their new film "The Art Of Self Defense" Starring Jessie Eisenberg and Imogen Potts. Bleecker Street reached out to me to chat about their new dark comedy and I couldn't be more excited to share some of the tie in promos they have going on, in honor of the upcoming release of the film. I love Jessie Eisenberg and when I found out about this film, I had to add it to one of my must see films of the summer. To get me even more pumped, I visited the website https://why-karate.com/ to check out the dojo where the film is set and of course I called the hotline 1-855-Y-KARATE to get to know the sensei played by Alessandro Nivola. The film looks so funny and If the promo is as fun as the trailer, I can't wait to see the film in select theaters July 11th and everywhere July 19th.
"I Live My Life In Self Defense" (feat. The Art Of Self Defense)
We put up our guard when things get rough. Really, we tend to put up our guard a lot. It's our internal way of self defense. As the summer heats up and the sweat releases from our body, I have no choice but to open up about the issues that tend to put up my guard in an act of self defense. It takes one thing to trigger bad emotions and memories. Really, it was worst then, but now it just seems like a dark comedy, considering I smile a lot now. If I could talk about what is bothering me, I would. But there is a time and place for issues beyond my control. Instead, i'm going to talk about why we let our guard up. I watched Toy Story 4 last week. Woody really reminded me, of me. We spend so much of our lives in a routine. Sometimes serving others instead of ourself. We get used to the notion that we have to do what we've always done. Then when we get a glimpse of a life we've never had, we start to question and ask ourselves, is that the life that we want? We are scared to cross that line and make that glimpse a reality, when we know deep down that is what we want. We don't want to accept that, we are scared of change, we are scared of letting go. The hurt that has been done to us, the scars still remain and therefore our guard goes right back up in an act of inner self defense. How do we break that? For Woody, it took seeing life from Bo Peep's perceptive. He looked at her as a lost toy. When in reality, by loosing herself, she found herself and let go of the standard notions everyone is so used to. She was no longer living for someone, she was living for herself. Woody saw that and it shook him to his core. Everything that he stands for was turned on its head. He tried to run from those fears, but eventually it caught up with him and he set himself free. He let go of what he's known, to find something more. He's been there and done that. He knows the loss and the pain he has gone through. He doesn't want others to have to go through what he has gone through. So instead of staying with the life he has always known, he took a risk to help those who never had what he had the luxury of knowing. My point of this all is, sometimes it is hard to open up and admit the wrongs that have been done in life. From wrongs you have done yourself, to wrongs that may have been done to you. Sometimes life has a way of showing patterns from the past, pop up in the future, in a whole new, yet relatable way. As you grow the guard you put up as self defense turns into something else. Your inner self defense starts to shine through your outer persona to help those who may be in a similar situation. It goes a long way, because in the end, your'e not just helping others. There will come a moment of hesitation, because you feel that those who you want to help, may still need you. But sometimes, you have to set yourself free, to not only help them, but help yourself. Help yourself to break down the rest of your walls and turn your inner self defense into your outer growth.
